When your aircon stops working, it’s easy to be terrified, especially during summer months. But before you pick up the phone and call for professional help, there are a few simple steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue. These quick fixes sometimes solve the problem and save you time and money. Not to mention the sense of accomplishment that comes with restoring your own comfort!

Here’s a checklist of common issues you can resolve on your own.

1. Check for Tripped Breaker Panels

One of the most common reasons an air conditioner stops working is a tripped breaker. This is especially likely during high-demand seasons like summer.

If you're aircon stop working be sure to check double pole breakers.

How to Check Your Breaker Panel:

  • Locate your breaker panel (usually in the garage, basement, or outside).

  • If the breakers aren’t labeled, look for one that takes up two breaker spots—this is most likely the one for your AC system. Usually these are 20-50 amps which means they will have a 20 or 30 or 50 on the tip of the breaker.

  • Flip the breaker to the "off" position, wait a few seconds, and then flip it back to "on".

  • Go back inside and see if your air conditioner starts working.

  • If the breaker immediately trips again be sure to call Heat and Air Gurus immediately because this is frequently a dangerous situation.

Sometimes power surges or heavy usage can cause the breaker to trip. Resetting it often resolves the issue.

2. Check and Replace Thermostat Batteries

A dead thermostat battery can cause your entire air conditioning system to stop responding. This is an easy fix that many homeowners overlook.

Steps to Check and Replace Batteries:

  • Open the thermostat cover and check if the display is blank or unresponsive.

  • PRO TIP: If you have a Smart Thermostat like an EcoBee or Nest you do not have batteries

  • Replace the batteries, even if they aren’t completely dead—fresh batteries ensure optimal performance.

  • After replacing the batteries, set the thermostat to cooling mode and adjust the temperature to test if the AC kicks back on.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the right one. This fast battery change could be all your system needs.

3. Check the Furnace Light Switch

Many air conditioning systems share power with the furnace, which often has a light switch near it. If this switch gets turned off, the air conditioner won’t work either.

What to Look For:

  • Locate the switch near your furnace, which typically looks like a regular light switch.

  • Ensure the switch is in the "on" position. It might have been flipped off accidentally by someone in the attic, like a pest control worker or a technician.

  • This is a surprisingly common issue, especially during the holidays or after service visits. A simple switch flip can save you a lot of hassle.

4. Check and Change Your Air Filter

A dirty or clogged air filter can cause your air conditioner to stop working properly or even shut down entirely. Filters that are full of dust and debris restrict airflow, which can lead to system overheating, freezing up or shutting down.

  • Locate your air filter. It’s typically found near your furnace or in the return air vent. IF you cannot find it email a picture to info@NTXcomfortguru.com and we will provide you with free filter advice.

  • Remove the filter and inspect it. If it looks dirty or clogged, it’s time for a replacement.

  • Make sure to replace it with the correct size and type for your system. The size is usually printed on the side of the filter.

When to Replace Your Filter:

  • For standard 1-inch filters, replace them every 1-3 months, depending on usage and indoor air quality.

  • If you have pets or live in a dusty area or have a lot of pets or children running around, you may need to replace the filter more frequently.

  • A clean filter improves airflow, keeps your system running efficiently, and helps prevent costly breakdowns. Check your filter regularly to avoid unnecessary issues!
