EPA's reference values list R-410A at a GWP of 2,088, R-32 at 675, and R-454B at 465. Lower GWP does not describe efficiency, reliability, or installation quality; it is one environmental measure used in the rule.


What Is R-32?

R-32 is a single-component refrigerant used in certain new air conditioners and heat pumps. Because it is a single substance, its handling characteristics differ from a blended refrigerant, but the equipment must still be designed, labeled, installed, and serviced specifically for R-32.


What Is R-454B?

R-454B is a refrigerant blend used by several manufacturers in new residential HVAC equipment. Its EPA-listed GWP is lower than R-32's, but that number alone does not determine which system is the better fit for a particular home.

It also does not make R-32 and R-454B interchangeable. Each air conditioner is designed, listed, labeled, and charged for a specific refrigerant. Refrigerants should not be mixed, and a new refrigerant should not be added to an R-410A system.
